Avocados falling on zinc rooves

….make the most enormous bangs. It’s ok once you know what it is and we now hear it several times a night. We get about 50 avocados a day at the moment. Big and delicious. We eat them regularly and are giving most to the students, who have limited food supplies at the end of the semester. The rainy season is back with vigour. Not yet rain every day, but some pretty heavy rain storms. Jack was so terrified by the thunder one night that even being in my arms wasn’t close enough. He hung on tighter and tighter, apparently wishing he could be absorbed into my body. I think the fact that he was really experiencing rain for the first time in his memory had a lot to do with it. He seemed to connect the noise of rain on the roof with something alive. That wasn’t helped by the wind blowing the curtains.…

Birthday

We enjoyed Rick’s birthday, but probably Asha was the most excited. We managed a variation on eggs Benedict/florentine for breakfast, with toast, garden spinach and fried egg, topped with hollandaise sauce. It turned out to be quite a treat. We then went to a local ‘restaurant’ for their speciality cow tail slow-cooked in spicy sauce.…

Asha’s birthday cake was a castle. This creation took all of yesterday plus about 6 hours of preparatory effort. A lesson learned is that, while dry spaghetti might seem like a good alternative to bamboo Skewers, out breakfast loses its rigidity while inside the cake. Hence my painstakingly formed towers slowly but surely lent sideways…
